The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Follows Poor Response

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a more defined vision.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Key Recruitment

The news mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After several months of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that shift every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and hope your team can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect further news as production progresses.
